The Sword of Santiago

History

The sculpture has a historic value related to the city’s identity, which is expressed in the legend inscribed in the bottom part that reads: “Here, it is established in a definite way, the liberal city of Guayaquil”.

The sword was the emblem of the religious Order of Santiago, named after Santiago the Apostle, Patron Saint of Spain. As the Spanish founded our city, it has the same Patron, therefore the name of: Santiago de Guayaquil.
