Monument to Alfredo Baquerizo Moreno

 

Alfredo Baquerizo Moreno was a conservative politician born on September 28, 1859. He passed away on March 20, 1951. After winning the presidential elections Baquerizo Moreno carried out his duties as president from September 1, 1916 until August 31, 1920. During his administration he abolished the payment of taxes established in our colonial period along with the imprisonment by debts. He also built several roads, bridges, and many of the important hospitals in the country. As President, Baquerizo Moreno provided electricity and telephone services to the cities that lacked such basic services. During his period he commissioned the construction of the Monument to National Heroes of 1820, and increased the production of cocoa in the country.
